Introduction

The Programme for the Development of Leadership and Team Skills of USB Executive Development (USB-ED) aims to add value to the core business processes of an organisation by developing the ability of participants to deal effectively with leadership and team issues in the workplace.

What sets this intervention apart

Through this programme, participants are exposed to a number of learning areas, such as knowledge of and insight into individual behaviour and the functioning of task-oriented workgroups and intergroup activities. They are also equipped with the necessary leadership and team skills to be effective in an environment where teamwork is important.

Who should attend

The programme is aimed at middle managers and supervisors who value teamwork as a means of achieving top-class workplace performance.

Admission requirements

It is assumed that participants comply with the following requirements: English language competence at NQF level 4. Sufficient ability to read and comprehend learning material, write assignments and follow/participate in discussions on management issues.

How you will benefit

At the end of the programme, the participants will be able to:

  • describe different models of leadership styles
  • describe the meaning of the core concepts in the field of group dynamics
  • analyse observed behaviour in terms of the leadership style and phases of group development models, and motivate conclusions drawn from observed behaviour
  • apply theoretical frameworks of leadership and group dynamics to a given case study on leadership
  • diagnose the effectiveness of leadership and team functioning in own work environment
  • develop a strategy to improve team effectiveness in own work environment, with specific focus on the role of the leader
  • develop a personal leadership growth plan
Certification

On successful completion of the programme, participants will receive a certificate from the University of Stellenbosch.

Content overview
This programme will focus on:
  • the behaviour of the individual in group situations
  • assessing own behaviour and feedback from team members
  • the functioning of successful management teams
  • exploring the processes and functioning of highly successful teams
  • experience in competitive intergroup situations, so that win-lose situations are changed to win-win situations
  • assessment of own conflict management style and learning how to manage conflict in organisations
  • efficient management of change in organisations
  • diagnosing the readiness of the organisation for change
  • sharing experiences of managing change: what not to do.

This programme is presented on the complexity level of an NQF level 5.

Fees include programme fees, programme material, lunch and refreshments, and are payable before the commencement of the programme.

Payment Policy

It is of utmost importance that USB-ED be formally notified in writing of cancellation 14 days prior to the commencement date of the programme.

A cancellation fee of 10% will be payable for cancelling fewer than 14 days prior to the commencement of the programme.
