Introduction
Project management is becoming an increasingly important skill when strategic objectives need to be implemented both efficiently and effectively. The The Fundamentals of Project programme is aimed at equipping participants with a basic knowledge of project management, including: strategic context, relevant terminology, the time/cost/performance continuum and project graphs.
What sets this intervention apart
This intervention is designed to deliver maximum basic comprehension of the
fundamentals of project management in only two days. The programme was
developed from USB-ED’s 5 - day programme which has been presented to more than 11 000 participants since 1992.

Who should attend
This programme is aimed especially at:
- Individuals who have recently been exposed to the project environment and require a basic understanding of project management
- Functional team members, operating in the project domain, where integration of various technical inputs are required
- Young professionals who will be embarking on careers in which project management competencies will be a career advantage
- Project administrators who require a basic knowledge of project management principles.
Admission requirements
No tertiary qualification is required. Participants must have practical experience or exposure to projects in any environment. It is strongly recommended and in the participant’s own interest to have passed at least grade 12 Mathematics (standard) and to have English language competence at NQF level 5. A pocket calculator for basic arithmetical functions is required.

- ORIENTATION TO PROJECT MANAGEMENT:Defining projects and project management; relationships of projects to an organisation’s strategy; setting a course of action/keeping to the course of action; importance of performance, duration and cost standards/norms; relationships performance/cost/time, responsibilities of the role players, i.e. project managers and project administrators
- FORMULATION OF THE PROJECT SCOPE:The importance of early and complete scoping of a project; basic project scoping; understanding stakeholders and their requirements; assembling requirements into a statement of work and work breakdown structure; identifying project risks
- PROJECT MONITOR AND CONTROL:Understanding of precedence diagrams and Gantt charts for projects with non-repetitive tasks; monitoring variances of actual to planned cost and schedule; cost and progress information systems

Fees include programme fees, programme material, lunch and refreshments,

Cancellation Policy
It is of utmost importance that USB-ED be formally notified in writing of
cancellation 14 days prior to the commencement date of the programme.
A cancellation fee of 10% will be payable for cancelling fewer than
14 days prior to the commencement of the programme.
