, CEO of USB-ED officially invited guests to a breakfast event on the 22nd of January 2015 in Umhlanga
where USB Executive Development
had opened a branch towards the end of last year. It was an opportunity to work more closely with the people we have built relationships with over the years and to introduce USB-ED to local businesses.
Prof Andre Roux, Director for the Institute for Futures Research (IFR)
at the University of Stellenbosch was the guest speaker presenting on Foresight for surviving and thriving. Foresight can best be described as provision for, or insight into, the future or the act of looking forward.
Roux identified numerous megatrends affecting the environment and the world of work. One of which was Empowerment linked to the following quote by David Burstein regarding Millennials:“Millennials are more global, more tolerant, more diverse, more educated, more connected, and bigger than any generation before them. They embrace change. They are the only generation to come of age with one foot in the old word of pre-internet, pre-Facebook, pre-computer, doing their first research projects in libraries, and another foot in the digital era. They understand the best of the old world and the best of the new and are happily blending them together. They are defined by their willingness to try new things, to adapt, and to bootstrap – something they’ve had to learn in the wake of the recession. This nimble ability to adapt and move in our current fast future position Millennials uniquely among generations. They are seen as pragmatic idealists”
In addition to the megatrends, Roux addressed and explained the multiple paradoxes that are at play such as economic growth vs finite resources, universalism vs individualism, aging population vs youth unemployment, poverty vs income divide and old world vs new world. Given the megatrends and paradoxes, Roux ended the morning talk with three burning questions to ask: what? so what? now what?
